Man United go marching on

Stretford Paddock bring you the match review as Man United go through to the last 16 in the Champions League.

The Red Devil’s looked sharp under their new temporary boss Michael Carrick. United actually looked like they had a game plan and it worked. They kept it tight at the back and in midfield for the first hour then put the pressure on. Carrick made changes at exactly the right points in the game.

Ronaldo opened the scoring with a sweet finish after a mistake by Villarreal’s goalkeeper. Jadon Sancho got on the score sheet for the first time in a Man United shirt to make it 2-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal see him become the first player to score in the first five opening Champions League group stage ties, for an English club.

United missed out on qualifying for the group stage last season and was put into the Europa League where they lost in the final on penalties.

Although the game was not dominated by either side there were some standout players for Carrick’s side. Fred played well and broke up play in key areas.

Donny van de Beek had a rare start but looked like he was missing match fitness, with that said he had a solid game in the midfield.

Villarreal didn’t really go for it, it was almost as if they were resigned to beating Atalanta in their last group match to go through to the last 16.

Carrick actually looked like a manager, he was suited and booted and had a game plan. Some United fans believe that Carrick will be a stand in manager until the end of the season at least. The hashtag on social media of #CarrickIn is circulating along with the phrase “Carrick is at the wheel”.
